Japanese Tea House Project
When Tomoko Yamamoto and her family relocated to Des Moines from California during World War II, they brought a rare treasure -- their Japanese teahouse. Reassembled on the third floor of of Fae Huttenlocher’s Victorian home on 27th street, the two women created an extraordinary environment of understanding and appreciation of Japanese culture through classes on chanoyu, the rites of tea, and ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement.
Years later, when the house was sold, the teahouse was disassembled again, stored in crates … and lost to the community for decades.
Soon … restored using traditional Japanese techniques … the teahouse will come to life again in the Des Moines Botanical Center’s Gardeners Show House. Once again the community will share the tranquil tea ritual and the beauty and simplicity of Japanese teahouse design at its best.
You can help us restore this unique piece of our cultural history. Just fill out the donor card and send your contribution to the Japan America Society of Iowa (JASI), and join us for the Project’s kick-off during the JASI’s 20th anniversary celebration at the Botanical Center on December 12, 2009.
The Teahouse Restoration Project is a partnership between JASI and the Des Moines Botanical Center. The restoration will begin in 2010.
