May 2019

It’s May and finally the spring is here in Iowa!!!

In Japan, May 1, 2019, Japan’s new emperor, Naruhito, ascended the throne as the 126thEmperor of Japan.  Emperor Akihito abdicated the Chrysanthemum Throne on April 30, 2019, making the end of the Heisei era.  The year 2019 corresponds to Heisei 31 until April 30, 2019, and Reiwa 1 from May 1, 2019.

Reiwa (令和) represents “a culture being born and nurtured by people coming together beautifully” / “Beautiful Harmony”.  The kanji characters for Reiwa are derived from the Manyoshu, an eighth-century anthology of waka poetry, and the poetry translation to English as:
It was in new spring, in a fair ("Rei") month,
When the air was clear and the wind a gentle ("wa") breeze.
Plum flowers blossomed a beauty's charming white
And the fragrance of the orchids was their sweet perfume.

Emperor Naruhito promises to continue the path walked by his father, “sharing in the joys and sorrows of the people”.  Please join us celebrate and welcome the new Reiwa era, and the Emperor Naruhito will be the new symbol of Japan and Japanese people, and he will be with us for a journey uniting us together and building our new culture.

Have a wonderful spring month everyone, and hope to see you all at CelebrAsian!!
