30th Anniversary Reception and Japanese Cultural Performances

from 15.00

Theatre Nohgaku Performance: 4:00pm - 5:00pm

Noh, one of the world's oldest continuously performed stage arts, combines highly stylized dance, chant, music, mask and costume with intense inner concentration and physical discipline. Theatre Nohgaku is dedicated to sharing noh's beauty and power with English-speaking audiences and performers. We believe noh performance techniques offer a potent means of expression within the context of contemporary theatre. By exploring possibilities that transcend cultural and linguistic boundaries, we strive to create a new kind of theatre ideally suited to the 21st century.

Soten Taiko Performance: 5:30pm - 6:30pm

Soten Taiko is central Iowa's only taiko drumming group. The name of the group translates as "Blue Sky” Taiko. Our goal is to share the ancient sounds of taiko drumming under the blue skies of Iowa. The group, which is part of the Japan America Society of Iowa, began in March of 2011 with the idea to introduce and share the traditional Japanese art form with the community. Starting with only two Taiko drums, the group has gradually added more Taiko Drums, Japanese instruments, and the Japanese Lion Dance, or Shishimai. The group has performed at a number of events, such as IAA Asian Heritage Festival, Bacon Festival, school and community cultural events, and corporate gatherings.
